Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, based in Amsterdam, is considered to be one of the best orchestras in the world. It was established in 1888 and has collaborated with some of the greatest conductors and soloists, including Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, and Igor Stravinsky. The orchestra's unique sound is a result of the chief conductors who have influenced it, as well as the exceptional acoustics of The Concertgebouw. Concert videos from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra are now available on Symphony.live.

About Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

The Concertgebouw Orchestra has had seven chief conductors to date: Willem Kes, Willem Mengelberg, Eduard van Beinum, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Chailly, Mariss Jansons, and Daniele Gatti. Klaus Mäkelä will join the orchestra as artistic partner from the 2022-23 season, becoming chief conductor in 2027. The orchestra continues to develop long-term relationships with contemporary composers and expand its reach through concerts, videos, streaming, radio and television broadcasts, as well as releasing CD and DVD recordings on its Concertgebouworkest Live label.

The orchestra gives approximately eighty concerts at The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and forty concerts at other major concert halls around the world. Its reach extends even further through various mediums, and it has established the Academy of the Concertgebouw Orchestra to shape young, talented musicians into players of the highest calibre. The Concertgebouworkest Young program unites hidden talents aged between fourteen and seventeen from all over Europe.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is co-funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Municipality of Amsterdam, sponsors, funds, and numerous donors worldwide. The majority of its income comes from the concerts it performs in the Netherlands and abroad.

Overall, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has earned its reputation as one of the world's finest orchestras through its exceptional musicianship and collaborations with leading artists, conductors, and composers. Its unique sound and commitment to fostering new talent have made it a beloved institution among music lovers worldwide.
